At
the 2007 Juried Gourd Show held at Casa Grande Arizona, the mask
to the left
was judged by the Arizona Gourd Society as First Place
in the division and awarded Judges’ Choice, the top prize
for the show.
Hal
Sager is a gourd mask artist. Every mask is original
and unique.
Each mask starts with a gourd and can include
carving, burning, jewelry, bead work, horse hair, fur, horns,
antlers, bone art, feathers and other items that fit
with the mask being created. Each mask is hand painted
or stained and sealed for durability
and long life.
The designs are accomplished by using the
experience of Hal's travels in the Northwest and
Southwest of the United Sates as well as Alaska,
Hawaii, Mexico, Spain, Canada, South America and Africa.
In
2005 and 2008 Hal's gourd masks brought top
dollar at a benefit auction for the University of
Arizona Museum of Art.
There
have been several articles written about Hal and his art.
He was the featured artist in a Canadian gourd art newsletter
and web site that has distribution in 14 countries. Hal
has been a commissioned to make two masks for the Agua
Caliente - Band of Cahuilla Indians - in California.
That was a great honor for the artist. To
view this mask, see photo "Z".
Typically, masks are created for the customer on
commission and can be delivered in thirty days.
Occasionally existing masks are available and can be
viewed by photo or e-mail. Like other forms of art, the
mask should enhance the home and be appreciated by the
owner. If it¹s not working, it can be returned within
thirty days for a refund or another mask.
Prices range from
$300 to $1,250 for dramatic wall
masks. Smaller, simpler masks can be purchased for as
little as $150. If these masks were available through
retail galleries, prices would be doubled or more.
Hal's main studio is in Marana, Arizona but he
spends summers in McCall, Idaho and the Northwest.
